Parotitis is swelling of the parotid glands, the large salivary glands located in front of and just below each ear, along the jawline. When these glands become inflamed, it causes noticeable swelling in the cheek and jaw area, pain (especially when eating or opening the mouth), and sometimes fever.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parotitis can be caused by:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Viral infections (such as mumps, which causes swelling on both sides)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bacterial infections (often from a blocked salivary duct, dehydration, or poor oral hygiene\u2014 typically affects one side)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Salivary stones (small calcium deposits that block the duct and cause the gland to swell up, especially around mealtimes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common treatment: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We evaluate the area with visual examination and\/or nasal endoscopy\/laryngoscopy if appropriate. Treatment depends on the underlying cause which may include but not limited to rest, fluids, warm compresses, and over-the-counter pain relievers, antibiotics, sour candies or lemon drops to stimulate saliva flow and help clear the gland.
