What it is:

A rapid, unexplained loss of hearing — usually in one ear — that happens all at once or over a few days. It may be accompanied by ringing in the ear (tinnitus) or dizziness. This is considered a medical emergency.

Common treatment:

Seek treatment immediately — the sooner treatment begins, the better the chance of recovery. We evaluate the ear with visual examination and/or binocular microscopy if appropriate. You will have an audiogram (hearing test) completed the same day to better directly treat. Oral or injected steroids into the ear drum are the primary treatment. Your doctor will also run tests to rule out other causes. Time is critical — delays in treatment can result in permanent hearing loss.
