Auricular Hematoma
What it is:
When the outer ear gets hit or injured (common in contact sports), blood can collect between the skin and the cartilage. If not treated, the ear can become permanently lumpy and misshapen — resembling a cauliflower.
Common treatment:
We evaluate the ear with visual examination. The collected blood needs to be drained by a provider as soon as possible. A compression dressing will then be applied to prevent it from filling back up. In older, hardened cases, surgery may be needed to reshape the ear. A follow up will be necessary for the compression dressing removal. Treatment will be based upon clinical examination and findings which can include but not limited to antibiotics and/or pain over-the-counter pain relievers.
